Vitamix Soap Nut Liquid Detergent Recipe (great for HE washers)

Most commercial laundry detergents do more than just clean your clothes — they coat them. Hidden behind bright scents and “fresh” labels are synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, and chemical surfactants that cling to fabric fibers long after the rinse cycle ends. Each time your family wears or sleeps in those clothes, trace residues of petroleum-based solvents, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and hormone-disrupting phthalates rest directly against the skin: our body’s largest organ.

For children and anyone with sensitive skin, these invisible layers can contribute to irritation, allergies, and even low-level chemical buildup that’s easily overlooked. Airborne detergent dust and artificial fragrance particles also circulate in our homes, affecting indoor air quality more than many people realize.

This Vitamix soap nut detergent skips all of that. It relies on the natural saponins inside soapberries. Soapberries are a gentle, biodegradable surfactant that lifts dirt and oil without leaving toxic residues behind. No synthetic scent, no filler, no coating – just truly clean fabric and fresh air. It’s better for your skin, your washer, and your home ecosystem.

This method is excellent if you want to make a ready-to-pour detergent with stronger cleaning power, which is ideal for cold washes or when you want more consistency.

Ingredients

  • 10–12 whole soap nuts (about 30–40 grams)
  • 6 cups of water
  • Optional: 10 drops of essential oil (like lavender, tea tree, or lemon — not required)
  • Optional: 1 tsp washing soda or baking soda (for boosting)

Directions

  1. Boil the soap nuts in 6 cups of water for 10–15 minutes.
  2. Let it cool for 30–45 minutes; the water should be amber-colored.
  3. Pour everything into your Vitamix (shells and liquid).
  4. Blend on high for 30–60 seconds until smooth and slightly frothy.
  5. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a jar or bottle.
  6. Store in the fridge for up to 2–3 weeks (it’s natural, so no preservatives).
  7. Use 2–3 tablespoons per load of laundry in the detergent compartment.

For longer storage, you can freeze it in ice cube trays, then toss 1–2 cubes per load.

Bonus: Soap Nut Cleaner for Everything

That same liquid works as an all-purpose cleaner:

  • Mix 1 part soap nut liquid + 1 part water in a spray bottle.
  • Optional: add a few drops of essential oil.
  • Use on counters, floors, or dishes (test small areas first).

Notes for HE Washers

  • Soap nuts and liquid are both low-sudsing, so completely safe for HE models.
  • If you have very cold water and short cycles, the liquid method may clean better than the bag method (it releases the saponin right away).
