Homemade Wild Yam Cream Recipe

Wild yam root may be trending lately, but it’s been around for ages! Here are some of the main benefits of using wild yam cream:

  1. Hormone balancing – Wild yams contain diosgenin, a phytochemical that can be converted into progesterone and DHEA in the body. This makes wild yam cream helpful for alleviating symptoms of PMS, menopause, and other hormone-related conditions.
  2. Skin health – Wild yam contains antioxidants and vitamin E which help improve skin elasticity and nourishment. The cream hydrates and soothes skin while combating aging.
  3. Alleviates cramps/pain – Topical wild yam cream has antispasmodic qualities that can ease muscle cramps and stomach pains related to menstruation or IBS.
  4. Reduces inflammation – Compounds found in wild yam have anti-inflammatory properties which can calm conditions like arthritis, joint pain, and eczema.
  5. Boosts mood – By helping to balance hormones and reduce inflammation, regular use of wild yam cream can lift mood, reduce stress and ease anxiety.
  6. All natural – Unlike synthetic hormone creams, wild yam cream provides hormones and nutrition naturally without side effects.

Consistency is key to experiencing the great benefits wild yam offers.

Instructions:

  1. Using a double boiler, melt the beeswax until completely liquid. Add in the shea butter and stir until combined. Remove from heat.
  2. In a small saucepan, warm the almond oil over low heat for just 1-2 minutes. Do not let it get hot. Add the chopped wild yam root and allow it to infuse for 4-6 hours, keeping it just warm.
  3. After the wild yam has infused, strain the oil through a cheesecloth to remove the root pieces. Squeeze cheesecloth to get all oil out.
  4. In another double boiler, gently heat the infused wild yam oil. When warmed, slowly pour into the melted beeswax and shea butter. Whisk continuously until fully blended and smooth.
  5. Remove from heat and allow to slightly cool. Add in essential oils if using and continue stirring for 5 minutes as it cools and thickens.
  6. Pour into containers or tins and allow to fully set at room temperature for 24 hours before using.
